The Record
Found within the Pottawatomi Conservation Area, Jones Falls is an interesting waterfall. I visited 15 years ago, and things may have changed since 2010. My stop in 2010 was somewhat disappointing. Given its proximity to Owen Sound and the many other waterfalls in the area, one might expect a good viewing experience, but the reality is a bit more obstructed. Despite the impressive height of the drop, several large trees effectively block the view of much of the falls, at least from the view close to the main road.
For those who want a better view, the left side of the river is generally the best bet for an “okay” view. There is a trail that leads across the river to the right side via a footbridge, but the photography opportunities there are nearly non-existent. The combination of thick brush and the angle of the escarpment makes it almost impossible to capture a clear shot. Furthermore, reaching the base of the falls is a complicated matter. During my visit, I didn’t see a way to descend that felt both safe and legal, though some local lore suggests an easier path might exist further back.
Seasonality also plays a role in the experience here. If you visit during August or September, be prepared for minimal water flow that can turn the cascade into a mere trickle. Perhaps, however, the difficulty of the view is a blessing in disguise. By remaining a bit “unfriendly” to photographers and casual tourists, Jones Falls avoids the fate of many other waterfalls that end up swarmed by crowds. It remains a quiet, slightly frustrating, but ultimately peaceful corner of the Niagara Escarpment that is perhaps best left to those who don’t mind a bit of a struggle for a modest reward.
Directions
- From Owen Sound, head west on ON-6/21. It’s not too far from Owen Sound.
- You’ll climb a few hilly stretches of the road, and if you look to your right, you’ll end up seeing the falls, at least partially. You’ll know you’re in the right area since there is a pretty big pull-off with trash cans right near the falls.
