The Record
Of the many waterfalls in Blue Mountains National Park, Katoomba Falls might just be the most impressive! At 750 feet tall, it’s truly a spectacular sight.
Katoomba Falls is easy to access via the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus—just check the map for the correct stop. Once you’re there, you can view the falls from several different vantage points. There’s one viewpoint to the right of the falls, though it doesn’t necessarily offer the best view. If you head west, you’ll pass the Katoomba Cascades and eventually reach a spot to the left of the falls. A trail leads to the base of the first drop, and if you zoom in on a photo, you might spot some very brave people standing down there. There’s a rope meant to keep people from going too far, at least in theory. Most didn’t seem to pay much attention to it.
If you continue down the trail on the left, you’ll reach another viewpoint that I liked the most. From there, you really get a sense of how tall the waterfall is. You’re farther away, but that distance helps you take in the full scale of the falls. There are two major drops, and it even looks like the water might keep flowing further downstream beyond what you can see.
Directions
- Head to Katoomba. You can actually walk to the falls from Katoomba, though it is easier to purchase an Explorer Bus pass that gets you to the falls. The falls are found at stops 10, 11, or 12.
- Explore around the area for your favorite vantage point. A trail on the left side of the falls is really fun, and I believe you pass by an interesting, but much smaller, second waterfall.
