Rjoandefossen, Norway

Rjoandefossen is a waterfall along the Flåm Railway. The falls drop 790 feet or 241 meters. The falls is surrounded by a lot of spring greenery.

You can refer to Kjosfossen for some more information about the Flåm Railway and waterfalls in Flåm, which is not terribly far from Bergen. Rjoandefossen is in my mind proof that you don’t have to try very hard to find waterfalls in Norway. They almost find you.

The Flåm Railway is a fascinating trip. You’re traveling along a steep railway from Flåm to Myrdal. At Myrdal, you can connect to trains leading to Bergen or to Oslo. Along the way, you’ll pass Rjoandefossen and Kjosfossen. With Kjosfossen, you have a chance to get out and take pictures. With Rjoandefossen, there isn’t a stop as the waterfall is on the other side of the canyon (fjord, whatever geological feature that would be…). But at almost 800′, Rjoandefossen is hard to miss! It’s honestly a stunning waterfall. On Google Maps, there is a road that seems to lead toward Rjoandefossen, but I didn’t explore that as I was able to view it from the train. And the train isn’t moving that quickly, so it isn’t difficult to capture multiple photographs. It was definitely worth the train ride and the visit to Flåm to see this and other falls.

Directions

  1. You want to get to Flåm, which is along the E16 Highway. Enjoy the trip…it’s a curvy drive and there are a LOT of long tunnels near Flåm.
  2. In Flåm, purchase tickets for the trip. I would suggest purchasing tickets for later in the day. Some of the trains were sold out and packed. I waited for the last trip of the day and the train was maybe 1/4 full. It was awesome, to say the least.
  3. Along the way, you’ll see Rjoandefossen, so enjoy the view!
