Moravian Falls, North Carolina

For some reason, I almost skipped Moravian Falls. The book I’m using is great, but it is an older version and I think Moravian Falls was not always accessible. It is currently! (With many waterfalls, access can change so please respect any updated signs.) Luckily, a search on Google Maps indicated that we could visit the falls.

We were looking for other waterfalls in northwest North Carolina near Boone. There are several falls in the area, but they aren’t as easily visited as some of the waterfalls west of Asheville. We attempted to drive to one, Cascade Falls near Purlear, and were thwarted. The road to the falls was blocked in both directions due to construction. This led to some very winding roads, and we finally settled on Moravian Falls.

Once we arrived, it was very clear the falls could be visited. You can see them from the road. Moravian Falls Campground requests that if you’d like to walk on the left side closer to the falls that you stop by the office for permission. Please follow that so people can continue to visit the falls. The falls were very peaceful in early November and the temperatures were pleasant. I’d definitely stop by again if I were passing nearby and wanted a peaceful break.

Directions:

  1. Head toward the town of Moravian Falls. US-421 is north of the town and passes through Wilkesboro about 2 miles north of the town.
  2. From Wilkesboro, head south on NC-16 toward the town of Moravian Falls.
  3. After a short distance on NC-16, you’ll turn right onto NC-18 heading west.
  4. After another very short distance, you’ll turn left onto Falls Road, and after maybe 1000-1500 feet, you’ll arrive at Moravian Falls, the waterfall. It’s on the left if you approach heading south. You can then stop at the campground office or call the number listed on the sign.

Accessibility: 10/10 (easy)
Height: 35′ (may be a 2nd level that’s not easily visible)
Length of Hike: roadside
