The Record

My husband and I did a circular tour through Slovenia, Croatia, and a bit of Italy, where we started and ended our trip. Slovenia is generally hilly, with some mountainous regions. A quick search for waterfalls on Google Maps shows that there are many scattered across the country. However, many of them don’t appear to be easily accessible.

I have about 15 to 20 Slovenian waterfalls pinned on Google Maps that looked interesting, but we only managed to visit one: Tilnik Falls. We initially tried to reach Slap Padstanajca, a waterfall near the village of Šebrelje. The drive there was winding and curvy, and while we found a trail, it turned out to be dangerously narrow and close to cliff edges. After about 10 minutes, we decided it wasn’t safe and turned back. Reviews for other waterfalls often mentioned their beauty but also warned about the difficulty of access, whether it involved hiking narrow trails or walking up streams. Overall, there aren’t many waterfalls in Slovenia that are straightforward, well-established tourist attractions. If you know of any that are easier to visit, feel free to leave a comment.

Interestingly, Slap Tilnik wasn’t even on my radar. As we were driving downhill from Šebrelje along Road 102 toward Ljubljana, I happened to spot a waterfall out of the corner of my eye. We had already passed it, but I was determined to add a Slovenian waterfall to our list. We turned around and located the falls, though the “parking area” was more of a steep shoulder than a proper turnout. We passed it, turned around again, and eventually managed to safely pull into a small roadside pull-off. The waterfall is visible from the road, and just a short walk brings you to a better viewing spot.

There are a few other roadside waterfalls in the area, though none we found were as easy to stop and view as Slap Tilnik.

Directions

  1. The waterfall is along Slovenian Road 102 between Dolenja Trebuša and Spodnja Idrija, closer to the first village.
  2. If you’re headed east from Dolenja Trebuša, there is a 7.5-kilometer drive to Slap Tilnik, and the waterfall will be on the left side of the road.
  3. It is easier to pull off in the small parking area if you’re headed east, since you can see the falls more easily headed in that direction. It’s an extremely short walk to the falls that you can already see from the car.
