Fifteen years passed between my visits to Robert Treman State Park. When I first went in May 2009, some trails were closed, but I was still able to see the main attraction, Lucifer Falls, and the smaller Old Mill Falls. Surprisingly, I completely missed a third major waterfall, Enfield Falls, even though it’s not exactly hidden or small.
One possible reason I missed it: Enfield Falls is located on the opposite side of the park. The western entrance offers a trail to Lucifer Falls, while the Rim and Gorge Trails, each just over two miles one way, lead to Enfield Falls. So it’s possible to hike between them, but I’ll admit I may have skipped the longer trek out of laziness. Usually, I remember skipping something due to time or energy, but not this time.
Instead of hiking the full Gorge Trail, which I’d do if I were staying longer in Ithaca, there’s a much easier option: you can park at the eastern entrance and take a short trail, less than half a mile round trip, to reach Enfield Falls. It’s extremely accessible, and I believe it can even accommodate wheelchairs, which is great. The falls are 70 feet tall, though you may only see part of them. Still, the view was impressive!
The only downside was a large concrete viewing platform that blocked part of the view. It was marked “no access,” making it tricky to get a good shot without including the structure.
In summer, swimming is allowed at the base of the falls, which may explain the dock. In spring or fall, though, that area is usually off-limits. As with most waterfall parks in upstate New York, it’s best to check ahead—many trails close in winter due to ice, and full access often isn’t restored until late May or early June.
Directions:
- From Ithaca, head south on NY-13 (or NY-13A). NY-13A merges into NY-13, so you’ll connect to NY-13 anyway.
- After 3 miles or so, there will be a right turn onto NY-327/Enfield Falls Rd.
- After 500 feet, you’ll find Park Road. Turn left and head to the parking area. From there, you can hike to the falls. Signs may call this Lower Falls.
Accessibility: 10/10 (easy)
Height: 70′ (21 m)
Length of Hike: 0.4 miles (0.65 km) round-trip
