Shunkawauken Falls, North Carolina

This is Shunkawauken Falls, a 90 foot/ 30 meter tall waterfall found in North Carolina. There isn't much water flowing over the falls.
Shunkawauken Falls in March 2017

I’m an opportunist, at least when it comes to waterfalls. I identify a few top-tier falls I want to visit, then see what others are nearby. Shunkawauken Falls probably doesn’t qualify as top-tier, though I don’t think it was my original destination. I believe that was Hickory Nut Falls in Chimney Rock State Park. I flew into Greenville-Spartanburg, and Shunkawauken Falls was along the route to Chimney Rock.

Shunkawauken Falls is located near the top of White Oak Mountain outside Columbus, North Carolina. I don’t recall the drive, but roads in western North Carolina are often winding and can feel disorienting, especially if you’re used to flat terrain like Michigan’s. The falls are roadside but situated on private property. There’s a small pull-off for one or two cars. Use caution, as these mountain roads are quite narrow. I was able to park, walk closer, and snap a few photos.

When I visited in March 2017, the falls weren’t flowing heavily, unlike others in the area. They’re fed by a pond higher up the mountain, which must have been low at the time. I wouldn’t make a special trip just to see Shunkawauken Falls, but it’s worth a stop if you’re passing through.

One final note, relevant to many North Carolina waterfalls: Hurricane Helene caused significant damage across western North Carolina in September 2024. While most towns have recovered, some smaller villages remain closed, and many trails may still be inaccessible. Check state park websites and Visit NC for up-to-date information.

  3. On your left, you’ll find White Oak Mountain Road. Turn left and drive for just under 2 miles.
  4. If headed north, the falls should be on the right of the road. I don’t remember where the parking spots are, but I think they were generally obvious.
