Aziz Cascades, Morocco

This post is really about two waterfalls in Talassemtane National Park, northern Morocco: one we unexpectedly visited, and another, the main attraction, we couldn’t reach. Akchour Falls (Cascades d’Akchour) eluded us, but the lesser-known Aziz Cascades offered a small consolation.

As part of a guided tour, we aimed to hike to Akchour Falls. Hike reports vary depending on the starting point, and we were dropped off at the entrance to a parking area that shortens the route. The trail starts out straightforward but becomes increasingly difficult. With proper footwear and perhaps a hiking pole, or a willingness to get wet, it’s doable. Our group of 12, including the guide, set out, but only six of us made it to a point where the trail became unclear. At times, we had to rock-hop through the river. Based on the guide’s advice, we decided to turn back. The hike is possible with preparation, but even with hiking boots, I wasn’t fully ready. (I’d hoped the path would be clearer, especially since it’s in a national park, though I heard recent trail damage may be a factor.)

On the return hike, we reunited with the rest of the group and continued to a nearby spot to relax and have mint tea. I realized we were heading toward another set of waterfalls visible on the map, though not as well-known as Akchour Falls. These smaller drops, referred to on Google Maps as the Aziz Cascades, may go by another name. The creek is beautiful, with multiple small falls, but they’re not worth a special trip unless you’re already nearby or can’t make it to Akchour.

Directions:

1. Search for Akchour Falls and head to the parking area. We started from Chefchaouen and I don’t know what path we took to arrive there since our driver was far more familiar with the area.
2. Once you enter the site, you walk past tourist shops and some restaurants. You’ll see a manmade waterfall flowing over a dam as you approach the hike.
3. To reach Akchour Falls, you can follow the path on the right side of the river. There is a bridge that leads to the left side of the river, and that will lead you to the Aziz Cascades. I would recommend going with a guide who knows the conditions of the area.
