Gorges State Park in North Carolina is home to an impressive number of waterfalls: 26, according to the park’s website. Among the more accessible is Upper Bearwallow Falls, a relatively easy stop. Nearby are Turtleback Falls and Rainbow Falls, which, although technically outside the park, share a trailhead close to Upper Bearwallow.
The hike to Rainbow Falls is longer and more strenuous, but the waterfall is stunning and well worth the effort. In contrast, Upper Bearwallow Falls is a short, 0.5-mile round-trip hike. While the state park lists it as strenuous due to a 200-foot elevation change, I found it manageable. The uphill return does make it feel longer, though.
Upper Bearwallow Falls stands about 50 feet tall. You can’t get right up to it, but the viewpoint offers a decent look. It’s not the most thrilling waterfall, but if you’re already heading to Rainbow Falls, it’s a worthwhile addition.
Spanning 8,000 acres, Gorges State Park is crisscrossed by trails and forest roads. With so many waterfalls in Transylvania County, it’s impossible to see them all in just a few days. Prioritizing is a must for waterfall lovers.
Important note: Hurricane Helene caused extensive damage in western North Carolina in September 2024. While many areas have recovered, some small towns remain closed, and certain trails may still be inaccessible. Be sure to check the state park website and Visit NC for current updates.
Directions:
- On US-64 between Lake Toxaway and Cashiers, you’ll find a road to Gorges State Park.
- If you’re heading west from Lake Toxaway, you’re not far from the park. Turn left from US-64 onto NC-281 (also known as Whitewater Road) heading south.
- After a mile on NC-281, turn left onto Grassy Ridge Road, which should lead into Gorges State Park.
- Follow signs to the Upper Bearwallow Falls Visitor Center. The trail starts there.
