Lower Satulah Falls, North Carolina

This is a tall but thin waterfall in the mountainous areas of North Carolina. The waterfall is approximately 200 feet or 61 meters tall and is surrounded by many trees. In this photo, it was spring so the the trees did not have leaves. The falls were more visible because of this.

Of the many waterfalls in the mountains of western North Carolina, Lower Satulah Falls is a straightforward stop. This waterfall-rich region also includes eastern Tennessee, northwest South Carolina, and northeast Georgia, making it possible to plan a trip that hits all four states.

Located just off NC-28 south of Highlands near the Georgia state line, Lower Satulah Falls is best viewed in early spring. During this time, the water flow is stronger, and the lack of leaves provides a clearer view from the pull-off area.

While not as impressive as other nearby waterfalls like Glen Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Dry Falls, its convenient location makes it an easy addition for those looking to explore the numerous falls in the Highlands area.

Directions:

  1. From Highlands, drive south on NC-28 about 3.5 miles to the Satulah Overlook.
  2. The overlook will be on your right if headed south, and parking is available there.

Accessibility: 10/10 (easy)
Height: 200′ / 61 m
Length of Hike: Roadside
