The Record
Sometimes the most unexpected sights appear when you’re on a journey for something else entirely. We’ve been watching Turkish historical dramas, and one of the cities mentioned is Bilecik, Türkiye. We visited without a specific plan, but found that the tomb of Şeyh Edebali, a pivotal figure in the founding of the Ottoman Empire, was entombed there. The tomb itself is an interesting visit, but we were surprised to discover a tall waterfall cascading into the Şeyh Edebali Canyon right nearby. You can get a rather good view of this beautiful waterfall from the area around the tomb, where it serves as a dramatic natural backdrop to the historical site.
Naturally, our first instinct was to wonder if we could get a closer look. However, a bit of quick research confirmed our suspicions that the trek down is not for the faint of heart. As of 2025, the access trail is officially listed as closed, and for good reason. Reviews and warnings from other visitors frequently mention that the route is dangerous, involving steep, unmarked paths, scrambles over loose rock, and extremely slippery conditions…all without any safety railings. It is not a sanctioned or maintained trail, and attempting it would be unwise.
For this reason, I cannot recommend making a special trip to see this waterfall. Türkiye is blessed with countless stunning and far more accessible waterfalls that are safer to enjoy. However, if you find yourself in Bilecik, visit the tomb and enjoy the lovely view of the falls from a safe distance.
