The Record

Our December 2024 trip to the Franz Josef Glacier region offered a fresh perspective on the ever-changing landscape of New Zealand’s South Island. While the directions to the parking area remain unchanged, the trail experience has evolved significantly compared to previous years. We embarked on the trek toward Trident Creek Falls, completing a hike of just over 0.5 miles to a designated overlook. Beyond this point, legal access was restricted, serving as a reminder of how dynamic and protected this glacial valley truly is. From this vantage point, the glacier itself appeared as a distant, somber monument to a warming climate, having receded considerably further into the mountains than in decades past.

Even with the glacier at a distance, the journey along the trail is breathtakingly scenic. During our summer visit, the flow of Trident Creek Falls was notably delicate. The seasonal lack of heavy rainfall meant the falls weren’t at their thundering peak, but their slender ribbons of water still added a serene beauty to the rugged rock faces. Along the path, several other unnamed waterfalls gracefully spill down the valley walls, providing photography opportunities even when the main attractions are at low flow. The hike to the viewpoint remains a must-do for its geological drama and lush surroundings, offering a poignant look at one of the world’s most famous natural wonders in transition.
