The Record
While Eugenia Falls often draws the crowds in Ontario’s Grey County, the nearby Hogg’s Falls is a hidden gem that can offer a more intimate and rewarding experience. Located just a short drive from its more famous neighbor near Owen Sound, Hogg’s Falls may lack Eugenia’s dramatic height, but it more than makes up for it with its rugged charm and serene atmosphere.
One of the most immediate advantages of visiting Hogg’s Falls is the peace and quiet. Unlike the sometimes “crazy” crowds at Eugenia, Hogg’s Falls feels like a true local secret. During my visit, there were only a handful of other hikers on the trail, allowing for a much more contemplative experience with nature.
Interestingly, despite being the smaller of the two, the water flow at Hogg’s Falls was significantly more impressive during my trip. While Eugenia Falls had slowed to a mere trickle, Hogg’s Falls was in full force, with the Boyne River cascading powerfully over the limestone ledge. The sheer volume of water made for a much more dynamic and interesting sight.
The surrounding scenery is also a major draw, especially if you time your visit correctly. I happened to go in the autumn, and the transformation was breathtaking. The vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows of the changing leaves created a stunning frame for the rushing white water. Against the backdrop of the mossy rocks and the crisp fall air, the colors really popped.
