The Record
While the impressive Wentworth Falls draws a lot of attention in the Blue Mountains, those who take the time to embark on the Charles Darwin Walk are often treated to a bonus: a beautiful, unnamed waterfall just upstream from its more famous counterpart. It’s not a destination most people set out to find specifically, but it’s a delightful discovery on what is already a truly scenic and enjoyable walk.
My journey along the Charles Darwin Walk on an early May morning was particularly memorable. The air was crisp, and I even saw frost clinging to the plants as I started, adding a magical touch to the already stunning natural beauty of the area. The trail itself is a testament to the geological wonders of the Blue Mountains. It’s a picturesque walk that captures the essence of the park, even before you reach any major landmarks.
This charming waterfall appears right before you reach the dramatic crest of Wentworth Falls, making it a wonderful prelude to the grander spectacle. It’s a serene cascade, offering a moment of quiet beauty amidst the rugged landscape. The ease of the walk, combined with the tranquil atmosphere and the surprise of stumbling upon this smaller fall, makes the entire Charles Darwin Walk a highly recommended experience for anyone with a few hours to spare in Wentworth Falls.
Directions
- From Wentworth Falls train station, head left into the town center.
- Navigate to the Great Western Highway (Highway 32).
- Locate the sign for the Charles Darwin Walk, typically near a children’s park, and begin your hike.
- Follow the well-marked trail along Jamison Creek. The waterfall will be visible along the walk, shortly before you reach the various viewpoints for Wentworth Falls.
- Return via the same path (or explore other marked trails if you have more time and daylight). The entire loop to Wentworth Falls and back is approximately 3.5 miles and takes around 3 hours.
