The Record

Just as Ysta-Rjúkandi commands attention with its massive drop, its southernmost sister, Fremsta-Rjúkandi (which I’m also referring to as Rjúkandafoss), offers a different kind of beauty. Known for its distinct “stair-step” or zig-zag formation, this waterfall cascades down the cliffs of the Jökuldalur valley in a series of elegant, rocky tiers. While it may not have the sheer volume of the main Rjúkandafoss, its intricate path through the mountain’s natural gullies makes it a favorite for those who appreciate the smaller, more detailed wonders of the Icelandic landscape.

Unlike the now-popular main Rjúkandafoss, Fremsta-Rjúkandi remains a truly “undiscovered” roadside gem. Even today, there is no dedicated parking area or official hiking trail for these specific falls. Most travelers simply enjoy the view as they drive past, or catch a glimpse of it in the distance while walking the trail at the main Rjúkandafoss site. In 2012, stopping on the shoulder to capture this “S-shaped” cascade felt like a secret exchange between the traveler and the mountain—a quiet moment of discovery that, thankfully, still feels much the same today.

Directions

  1. Rjúkandafoss is found along the Ring Road between Akureyri and Egilsstaðir, much closer to Egilsstaðir. It is on the left side of the road as I was headed east. I believe the falls is referred to as “Foss” on Google Maps, which I’ve included below. Mið-Rjúkandi is to the east of this waterfall.
