The Record

Driving along and near the coast of Norway, there is an almost endless parade of waterfalls. Skjervsfossen stands out even in this crowded field of natural wonders. This powerful waterfall is a must-see, cascading a total of 383 feet in a series of dramatic drops. It’s one of those amazing sights that make a Norwegian road trip so unforgettable.

The approach to the falls is an experience in itself. The road is quite curvy, building anticipation as it winds through the landscape, offering tantalizing glimpses of the waterfall from a distance. What makes Skjervsfossen particularly unique is its intimate relationship with the road. In a fascinating feat of engineering, a road bridge actually passes over the waterfall, separating its two main drops. This gives you the incredible opportunity to not only view the falls from afar but to stand right in the middle of the cascade, feeling the spray and hearing the roar of the water.

While navigating the roads in this region, keep your eyes peeled for more natural beauty. Along the same route, though flowing from a different river, you can also spot Skarvefossen. It serves as a reminder that in this part of Norway, another breathtaking view is always just around the next bend.

Directions

  1. At the intersection of E16 and 13 in Voss (Vossevangen), head southeast along Norway Route 13.
  2. After 13 km, you’ll turn left onto Skjervsvegen and drive down to the falls. I don’t think I stopped on the bridge over the falls since construction was being done on the road in 2015. You may be able to stop and get a great view of the upper falls.
