The Record
Rutledge Falls, tucked away in Coffee County, is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a quick nature escape. One of the best things about this spot is how accessible it is. Unlike many of the more strenuous treks in the region, reaching the falls involves only a very short hike from the road. It’s a relatively easy walk, making it a perfect outing for families or those who want to see something spectacular without committing to an arduous day on the trail.
While many people flock to the woods in the spring and summer, Tennessee is actually a fantastic place to explore waterfalls during the winter months. The state’s winters are generally mild, so you rarely have to worry about bone-chilling cold while you’re out exploring. Even better, the lack of foliage on the trees during the colder season is a major advantage for photographers and nature lovers alike. Without leaves blocking the view, you get much clearer, fuller perspectives of the cascading water, allowing you to appreciate the raw beauty of the falls in a way that just isn’t possible during the lush summer months. In addition to Rutledge Falls, Machine Falls, Lower Busby Falls, and Lower Busby Falls are just a few miles away, and I was able to visit all on the same day.
Directions
- Rutledge Falls is in between the cities of Tullahoma and Manchester, and TN-55 connects the two cities.
- Follow TN-55 out of either city (or Old Manchester/Tullahoma Highway, which runs parallel). If you’re headed northeast from Tullahoma on Old Manchester Highway, there is a left turn onto Rutledge Falls Road.
- Rutledge Falls Road leads pretty much directly to the trailhead, though there might be a few sharp turns.
- From the parking area, follow the trail to the falls.
