The Record

When I first started looking for waterfalls on Caribbean Islands 10 or so years ago, Dominica was the main search result that would pop up. Information about waterfalls across the world has become more abundant, and I found that islands like Grenada and St. Vincent also had an abundance of waterfalls. I haven’t visited Dominica yet…it’s still on my list, but Grenada is my first Caribbean Island since Puerto Rico 16 years ago.

Grenada has been wonderful. Everyone is so friendly here, and I’m excited to visit again. As my first record in Grenada, I’ll start with one of the more complex waterfalls we visited, Au Coin Falls. Driving in Grenada is on the left side of the road and the roads are narrow and winding on the island. While I think the roads and driving are tamer than in some places I’ve visited, we opted for taxis and tours to explore the island, and I think that was a wise decision. I was much more comfortable with someone experienced behind the wheel.

The drive to Concord Falls took about 45 minutes even though the distance from our hotel is 11 miles. You won’t be driving extremely fast. Concord Falls is an easily visited waterfall that I’ll describe later…There are 2 waterfalls further upstream that require some hiking, but are equally as beautiful. These can be accessed via a trail at the end of the road to Concord Falls. The first is Au Coin Falls, and Fountainbleu Falls is even further upstream. We chose to visit Au Coin Falls, but decided against Fountainbleu Falls since the hike to Au Coin was already a bit taxing.

The first 60% or so of the hike is flatter with some uphill climbs. Wear good, waterproof shoes as the trail tends to be wet and muddy, even in the dry season. You’ll cross the stream at least once in that first portion. The remaining 40% isn’t terrible but requires 5 to 6 stream crossings, having to climb and “jump” across boulders in the stream. It’s not a fast hike because we were constantly figuring out our next steps to ensure we wouldn’t injure ourselves. But once you reach the waterfall, it’s an astonishing sight. Keep trekking on! You’ll have the trail to yourself most likely.

Directions

  1. We hired someone to drive us to the falls, though we didn’t hire a hiking guide. (It could be useful to hire one, fyi.) The Western Main Road clings the coast of western Grenada.
  2. You’ll turn from the Western Main Road onto Concord/Concord Mountain Road and drive to the end of the road.
  3. At the end of the road, you’ll cross a river with a broken concrete bridge indicating the start.
  4. As mentioned, early on, it may appear that the trail ends, but the trail just continues along the river, so don’t give up too soon!
