The Record

Where North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia meet, there are what I can only describe as an insane number of waterfalls. (It’s a scientific term!) If you want to see many waterfalls in a few days, this region of the Appalachian/Blue Ridge Mountains is fantastic. I’ve visited the area several times, often starting in Greenville, South Carolina, completing a loop of sorts.

In March 2017, I was heading into North Carolina after visiting a few waterfalls in South Carolina. South Carolina Route 107 turns into North Carolina Route 107 (and vice versa). About 4 miles after passing into North Carolina, the trailhead for Silver Run Falls is on the right. The hike is short and leads to a beautiful waterfall. Silver Run Falls is 40 feet tall, at least the portion that is visible at the end of the trail.

The waterfalls in this area provide something for everyone. While some falls require longer hikes, Silver Run Falls doesn’t. I arrived very close to sunset and was still able to hike to the falls and back before the sun disappeared on the horizon. That was after a long day of looking for and hiking to other waterfalls, so I was glad this was a shorter hike.

Directions

  1. From Cashiers, North Carolina, head south on NC-107. 4-5 miles after driving along NC-107, you’ll see the Silver Run Falls trailhead on your left. I was heading north from South Carolina, so the parking area was on the right.
  2. From the parking area/trailhead, it’s a short hike to the falls.
