Silver Spray Falls, New Jersey

Silver Spray Falls is a fun waterfall in the Delaware Water Gap. You can access the falls from the same road as the more accessible Buttermilk Falls.

The most difficult part is finding the trail to the falls, and even that’s not too difficult. It’s just the trickiness of trying to interpret other people’s directions! (Update: this apparently is very true…I remember seeing a house near the fenced area, but apparently there isn’t one, at least not where I’m thinking…The house was off in the distance, if I remember correctly.) Once you find the trail, the walk is rather enjoyable and contains many hidden secrets. As I was hiking along in late May, I found another kind of orchid I had never seen and some kind of orange salamander. Keep an eye out for these fun treasures.

Directions:

  1. From Walpack Flatbrook Road (aka Sussex County Road 615), head toward Walpack Center.
  2. Turn onto Tillman Road. Go about 0.6 miles.
  3. Turn right onto Mountain Road. You will pass a cemetery as you turn, and you will end up on a dirt road.
  4. Proceed 1.4 miles along Mountain Road.
  5. At 1.4 miles, you will reach the “parking area” for the trail will be the first dirt area on your left. This is apparently right before you reach a tiny bridge with guard rails. (Thanks Charles and others.) The remnants of a stone fence are there. It might not look like much, but you can fit at least one car there and hike up the trail.

    It’s pretty much exactly 1.4 miles.
    However, no house, just a beat up fence.
    The trail is directly infront of where you park although it has become quite a bit over grown.

    Visited the falls today, after a good bit of searching back and forth I found it! Measure 1.4 miles from the intersection at the cemetery, just before you get to a tiny bridge marked by cement rails, there is a small parking area with a ramshackle fence around it which is marked on maps of the area as Houck Lane. There isn’t a house! Directly across Mountain Road from the parking area, there are remnants of a stone fence. Step over this, the look toward the stream. You should see a slight outline of a trail in the underbrush, follow it uphill generally along the ridge parallel to the stream with the field on your left. About when the field ends, look right and you’ll see the trail going over the ridge and descending toward the stream. Follow and the waterfall is evident!

    I was there last week and decided to see how far I could hike up past the falls. I was maybe a 1/4 mile from the top of the falls when I heard a second set of falls! The ravine is very steep along that section and trees blocked me from getting a picture of the falls. I tried climbing up the ravine but there’s a rough section with fallen trees that I couldn’t get past. I am going to to try again soon.

    Is it safe for dogs and little kids to come? want to take the family this weekend

      I don’t remember it being too much of an issue for dogs and little kids. I think they would do fine.

      It would depend on how young the children are. You have to cross a stream to reach the falls and the path to the base of the falls is narrow and there is a bit of a drop to the stream below. I would check it first when you get there it’s a short walk.

        We couldn’t find it. Went past cemetery and didn’t see any place to park. Or any type of trail.

        Hmmmmmm, there are a few people in the comments that explained how to find it (and I’ve tried to update those directions). It’s a bit tricky as it’s not obvious where to go.

    It can be hard to find, the key landmark for me was the road leading to the famhouse. It’s washed out but is used as a parking area. The directions are spot on.

      Didn’t see any road. Saw a guy parked next to a brown fence getting ready to fish. Drove at least a mile past cemetery.

        If you try it again drive until you hit Buttermilk Falls. The parking area for Silver Spray is about a mile
        before Buttermilk Falls.
