The Record
Grundarfoss is one of those Icelandic wonders that catches you completely by surprise as you navigate the scenic Route 54 along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. While the main attraction might be the iconic Kirkjufellsfoss just down the road, Grundarfoss offers a much more imposing sense of scale. Plummeting roughly 230 feet down a rugged basalt cliff, its sheer height makes it visible from miles away. It serves as a perfect example of Iceland’s “roadside giants”, those magnificent falls that command your attention without requiring you to ever leave the road.
For those looking to get a closer look, there is a visible track leading from a small parking area toward the base of the falls. We opted to enjoy the view from a distance this time. While the exact hiking time can vary depending on trail conditions, the path appears relatively straightforward for those who want to feel the mist. Even without the trek, Grundarfoss shows that some of the best sights in Iceland don’t require a backcountry expedition to appreciate.
Directions
- Route 54 (Snæfellsnesvegur) forms a loop around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Grundarfoss is on the northern half of the loop.
- I would set your GPS/Phone to “Track Leading to Grundarfoss”, especially if you’re interested in hiking to the falls.
