The Record
I went on my first cruise this month, and it felt right to choose Norway as the destination. I’m interested in getting outdoors, and this seven-day cruise through the fjords of Norway was a great option. Our first port, Molde, didn’t have any major waterfalls in the vicinity. Our second port was Olden, and this is where the jackpot starts.
Olden is a small village that is a half-hour drive from the main attraction, the Briksdal Glacier. Along the way, you’ll see many other waterfalls that I’ll describe later. I decided to describe Volefossen first since it is representative of many of the waterfalls you’ll find along the way. We were on an excursion with transportation to the start of the Briksdal Glacier hike/troll-car ride. The parking area provides amazing views of Volefosson.
To arrive at the glacier, we used “troll cars”, which save a lot of time. You’ll see Kleivafossen along the way, but not very well. So that’s why I recommend hiking back to the main parking area: You’ll see Kleivafossen, but you’ll also have some amazing views of Volefossen! It’s tall, at just under 1300 feet, which means it’ll pop into view every once in a while to remind you how awesome it is!
We were very lucky the day we visited Olden. Our tour guide said it was one of the few sunny days. Most photos of the falls and the glacier are shrouded in clouds and mist, but not when we visited. There’s a different vibe.
Directions
- After arriving in Olden, you’ll drive south on Fv724 for 22 kilometers. You’ll arrive at the Briksdal Glacier Mountain Lodge parking area. You’ll be able to see the falls from the parking area.
